HIgh School Basketball

That mind-set regarding girls sports is something Port Richmond High School athletic director Susan Rossi wants to change. She is spearheading a proposal to the Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL), which sets the schedules, to begin scheduling girls' junior varsity and varsity games on the same day, back-to-back, the way the boys' games are, to boost the number of fans at girls' games.

"We always have a large crowd at the boys' basketball games because we have the JV games backed up by the varsity," said Ms. Rossi. "We should be doing that for the girls. I believe it will happen. It's important because it will promote girls' sports, it will get more parents to come to the games and it will be good for school spirit."

She also believes the move could lead to an end-of-season tournament for the girls' teams, like the boys have -- with plenty of cheering going on.
